  1. Competitive Research
  2. Keyword Research
  3. Link Building
  4. Rank Tracking
  5. On-Page & Technical SEO

Market Research and Benchmarking

Before using this SEO tool, you must understand the big picture. SEMrush market research gives you an insight into a competitor’s audience online. Moreover, you’ll be able to compare your performance, traffic, and user engagement with any rival.

Here’s how to benchmark competitors against yourself:

  1. Click the SEO Toolkit.
  2. Select Domain Overview on the side menu.
  3. Put in the Domain Name- e.g.
  4. Click “Search.”

By clicking search a report will show you the statistics of the domain’s

  • Authority Source
  • Organic Search Traffic
  • Paid Traffic
  • Backlinks
  • Display Advertising

From the above, the reports show that the domain has a large authority in its niche.

As you scroll to the bottom of the page, you’ll also find more details in the graph view. These graphs display the keywords the domain gains from each country, amongst other things.

Then, scroll up to the upper right corner of the page and click the “Export PDF” button. With the PDF report, you can now benchmark the data and focus on outranking your competitors with SEMrush SEO strategies.

To ensure your SEO Skills pay off:

Repeatedly track your traffic analytics with competitors to know your progress. Moreover, ensure you closely monitor the visit duration and pages per visit. See where your rival is getting traffic from and target those locations as well. The aim of benchmarking is to identify your weaknesses and strengths, then compare them with your competitors.

Organic Research: Identify Your Top Search Competitors

The second step is to know your top competitors. We recommend that you benchmark at least four domains in a niche to analyze your biggest rivals. With organic research, you’ll examine your competitor’s keywords and rank higher.

Here’s how SEMrush Organic Research functions:

  1. Select SEO Toolkit
  2. From the side menu, Click on organic Research
  3. Put in the domain name – e.g. “” you want to monitor.
  4. Click Search
  5. Then Click on the Competitors tab below

The image above presently shows the “Positions Tab,” displaying the keywords trends and traffic. However, to track a competitor’s website, you should check the “Competitors Tab.”

This report shows a list of your leading organic search competitors based on the common keywords you have with them.

From the competitive positioning map, you’ll see where the X axis shows the number of keywords and the Y axis reflects the organic traffic volume. By analyzing this map, “Hootsuite” is “Neil Patel’s” most significant competitor. To further check the exact number of keywords that are similar to a competitors domain, simply tap the circles.

Below, the “Competitive Positioning Map” there’s a table that shows the Organic Competitors Report.

This table displays the lesser organic competitors and allows you to utilize it to drive better SEO results.

From the table, SEMrush reveals 125,557 potential rivals. Undoubtedly, this is faster and time-saving than searching through Google. Also, keep a close eye on the highlighted grades in the table:

  • Competitor Level– The larger the percentage of mutual keywords, the higher the level of the competition you’re faced with.
  • Mutual Keywords– This uncovers the number of common keywords that these domains rank in the top Google search results.
  • SE Keywords– It’s the number of keywords that drive a visitor to your rival’s blog pages through Google Top 100 organic searches.

Besides, we suggest you start with the Mutual Keywords. This filters the websites in Google’s top search results for the similar keyword you’re ranking for. The less common keywords, the smaller the competitors.

Now, let’s briefly touch the Organic Research overview as it’s also essential in helping you outrank your rivals. By default, this overview displays the number of keywords and traffic volume for the previous twelve months. They are displayed in graphs according to this list:

  1. Top Organic Keywords
  2. Top Position Changes
  3. SERP Features
  4. Top Pages
  5. Top Subdomains
  6. Main organic Competitors
  7. Competitive Positioning Map

From the overview, you can quickly dig deeper into your rival’s strategy without checking the “Competitive Positioning Map.” This lets you find the most practical keywords to rank for while filtering the mutual keywords with a competitor’s websites. Ultimately, by sorting the various metrics table, you’ll find keywords that can significantly improve or decrease your ranking in a month.

To start with:

Pick a website from the Organic Competitors with a large number of mutual keywords and precisely analyze the domain in detail.

Survey Your Rival’s Organic Traffic

After identifying your leading competitors, SEMrush provides an “All Access Backstage Pass” to view how they’re getting traffic. With this data, you can create a strategy to boost your organic traffic.

Let’s begin with the overview of the total organic traffic for “”

  1. Choose the SEO Toolkit
  2. Then click on Organic Research
  3. Enter the website’s name- e.g. “”
  4. Click on Overview

The Overview displays the website’s total Organic Traffic and Keywords. From the image, neilpatel has 485.1K keywords in the top 100 and gets 744K traffic visits in a month.

Now to further analyze a competitor’s traffic, you can either use the subfolder or subdomain. Here’s how they work.

With SEMrush filters, you can find the subfolder of your rival that drives more traffic to their site. Subfolders keep webpage documents. As an illustration, let’s use “”. Edmunds keeps its resale of used cars subfolder in the URL called “/used-cars/.”

To analyze the level of organic traffic it gets from this subfolder:

  1. Click SEO Toolkit.
  2. From the side menu, click Organic Research.
  3. Put in the website name- e.g. “”
  4. Click the Positions Tab.
  5. Apply Advanced Filters.

After applying Advanced Filters, the keywords and traffic gotten from only the /used-car/ subfolder will be displayed.

From the image, you can tell that Edmunds gets 464K visits per month (which is 0.19% of its total traffic), and it has 33.2K keywords(1.14% of full keywords) in its /used-car/ subfolder. This means this subfolder generates little revenue for the website.

This is another way to check the pages generating Organic traffic across different platforms. However, this tab shows the topics your rivals are targeting and not the keywords.

Now, let’s analyze the leading traffic-driving commercial purpose pages for

Still under Organic Research:

  1. Enter the website- e.g. “”
  2. Click the Pages Tab
  3. Apply Advanced Filters

For Homeadvisor, their roofing install page gets 1.7k visitsper month. Arguably, this page is among their high generating commercial intent topics.

Perform Keyword Analysis

  2. Put in the website you’re assessing, e.g., “”
  3. Click on the Positions Tab

Now, the keywords you should target have been reduced from 3.3M to 520.8K. You can dig deeper by picking subfolders to target, as we discussed earlier.

Find Long-Tail Keywords (For Search Intent)

If you’re operating a niche that has high competition. Your focus shouldn’t be on short-tail keywords. It’ll be difficult to outrank your competitors if you’re just starting in your niche. Thus, this is where the SEMrush Keyword Magic Tool comes in. For example, if you click “laminate”, it’ll display all the keywords relating to “installing laminate flooring.

Ultimately, it enables you to develop various subheadings that can be included in your content. Plus, you can create new content from them.

Create a Keyword Difficulty Standard

No doubt, this saves the time, resources, and money you’ll use in manually checking keywords. In the SEO Toolkit:

  • Click on Keyword Overview.

From the example, Healthline’s keyword difficulty is 78%. This means getting on the front page for keywords in this range won’t be easy, but it’s still more realistic to target them than keywords with 80% above. However, it’s better to search for websites with a keyword difficulty of less than 60%. This way, you’ll be able to outrank and set a standard for specific keywords.
